When a subluxation occurs in the cervical spine, it can put pressure on the nearby nerve root that exits between the affected vertebrae. That nerve doesn’t just stay in the neck, it travels down the body in a very specific pathway, often resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that radiates from the neck into the shoulder, down the outer arm, forearm, and into the thumb.
This is known as a pain radiation pattern. It is a map your nervous system follows. In other words, if you feel pain in your shoulder or thumb, the actual problem may be in your neck.
Why Treating Symptoms Isn’t Enough
Pain radiation is often complicated. It can feel like shoulder strain, wrist pain, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. That’s why treating only the location of the symptom (like the shoulder or wrist) often fails to provide lasting relief. You may take anti-inflammatories, wear a brace, or do stretches for the arm, but none of those will fix a subluxation in the neck. Subluxation is a condition when the spinal bones, instead of protecting the delicate nerves, interfere with the nerves. This causes damage to the end organ attached to them.
If you don’t address the root cause (nerve compression at the cervical spine) you’re essentially covering up a warning light rather than fixing the engine. Over time, this may lead to chronic nerve irritation, degeneration, and even loss of function.
Corrective Care vs. Temporary Relief
Corrective treatment targets spinal alignment, disc health, and nerve decompression. These approaches work to reduce pressure at the source, helping the nerve heal and symptoms resolve on their own.
Meanwhile, symptom masking care like: injections, medications, or topical relief, may provide temporary comfort, but not true correction.
