The Luckiest Back Surgery in the World? How One Unfused Vertebra Saved This Patient

In this particular case, we discovered something remarkable—something that may have saved this patient from a lifetime of spinal problems.

After reviewing the patient’s lumbar spine X-rays, one detail immediately stood out. The L5 vertebra had not been fused.

That single decision may have been the luckiest part of this patient’s entire surgery.

When Spinal Fusion Creates a Biomechanical Problem

Spinal fusion is designed to stabilize the spine by permanently joining two or more vertebrae together. Once a segment is fused and healed, movement at that level is permanently eliminated.

While fusion can be necessary in certain situations, it also comes with a major drawback: if the spine is fused in a poor biomechanical position, that position becomes permanent.

In this patient’s case, the fusion above L5 was not positioned ideally from a structural standpoint. Had the surgeon also fused L5, the patient’s lower spine would have been locked into that position for life.

There would have been very little anyone could do to improve the mechanics of the lumbar spine without additional surgery.

Why Leaving L5 Unfused Was So Important

Fortunately, L5 remained mobile.

Because the vertebra was not fused, it could still be evaluated and adjusted according to Gonstead Chiropractic principles.

This preserved motion gave us an opportunity to help restore better spinal balance and function.

In other words, the patient’s foundation was still adjustable.

That is why I call this the luckiest back surgery in the world.

Not because the surgery was perfect.

Not because the patient didn’t have challenges.

But because one critical vertebra remained free to move.
