Sciatica Relief in North County San Diego
Gonstead Chiropractic Care in Carlsbad, CA
At Gohl Clinic of Chiropractic, we help people throughout North County San Diego find relief from sciatica using the Gonstead System of Chiropractic, a precise, evidence-based approach focused on correcting the cause of nerve compression, not simply covering it up.
In many cases, the cause of sciatica is a vertebral subluxation, where a vertebra shifts out of its normal position and, instead of protecting the nerve, irritates and damages it.
If you’ve been dealing with lower back pain, hip pain, leg pain, numbness, or tingling and you’re unsure whether chiropractic can help, we’d be happy to check if we can help. We will explain everything clearly, and help you make informed decisions about your care.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. This nerve begins in the lower spine and travels through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg.
When something in the lower spine or pelvis interferes with the sciatic nerve, like a vertebral subluxation, you may notice sypmtoms like:
- Pain in the lower back, buttock, or leg
- Sharp, burning, or electric-like sensations
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Weakness or difficulty standing or walking
- Pain that worsens when sitting, bending, or standing. Usually worse sitting, or sitting to standing.
Sciatica is not always caused by “tight muscles.” Tight muscles are often the body’s intelligent way of protecting or splinting an injured area so things do not worsen. This is why you should NEVER attempt to “stretch” a spasmed muscle. Age has nothing to do with sciatica as many people probably much older than you do not suffer from it. In many cases, sciatica is linked to structural or mechanical problems in the lower spine and pelvis known as a subluxation.
How the Spine Affects the Sciatic Nerve
Your spine protects your nervous system. When the bones of the spine, called vertebrae, lose proper alignment or normal motion, they can irritate nearby nerves. This is known as a subluxation. When you have a subluxation, the vertebra always moves backwards.
Note in the NORMAL diagram, the posterior of the upper vertebra is in alignment with the lower. In the SUBLUXATION, the posterior inferior part of the vertebra has moved backwards and is now compressing the nerve.

In the lower back and pelvis, even small spinal changes can:
- Increase stress on spinal discs
- Reduce normal joint movement
- Irritate or inflame the sciatic nerve
Over time, this interference can lead to pain that travels far from the spine, often into the leg. That is why effective sciatica care starts with identifying exactly where and why the nerve is being affected. The longer symptoms remain, the greater the likelihood of developing degenerative disc disease, degenerative joint disease, arthritis, or even muscle atrophy.
Why Does This Happen?
Whether it is one big stress like a car accident, OR many little stresses like sitting day in and out, over time this stress can overwhelm the body’s ability to adapt.
Why Do I Have The Pain?
Pain is your body’s final warning sign. In chiropractic, we look for subluxation, or interference to the nerve. Since the nerve system controls the body, if subluxation is present, inherently there will be some form of malfunction at the cellular level. One cell malfunctioning isn’t that big of a deal. But if enough cells start malfunctioning, your body may alert you with a symptom. Pain is a great motivator. Other symptoms that are common with sciatica are menstrual issues, or constipation. If symptoms are covered with meds, given time the body will develop full blown disease. Degenerative disc disease or arthritis in the the musculoskeletal system, IBS in the excretory system, endometriosis in the the female reproductive system. Symptoms, like pain, are your body warning you that something is wrong. Blocking the symptoms with meds will make you feel better while the disease continues to progress. Ideally, as a chiropractor we would check people before symptoms. Children are ideal to be seen by a chiropractor long before problems arise from the traumas of being a kid!
What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care focuses on how the spine, joints, and nervous system work together. When the spine moves and functions properly, nerves can communicate more efficiently with the rest of the body.
Chiropractic does not involve medication or surgery. Instead, it uses specific spinal adjustments to restore nerve supply and allow normal movement to problem areas so that function may return.
Not all chiropractic techniques are the same, and this matters greatly for nerve-related conditions like sciatica.
Why Gonstead Chiropractic Is Different
The Gonstead System is one of the most detailed and specific chiropractic methods in the profession. It is especially useful for sciatica because it is designed to reduce guesswork.
- Identifying the exact vertebra contributing to nerve irritation
- Evaluating how the pelvis (sacroiliac joints), discs, and spine work together
- Adjusting only what needs to be adjusted
This approach allows care to be precise, controlled, and tailored to your unique spine.
The 5-Point Gonstead Analysis
Before any adjustment is made, we use the full 5-Point Gonstead Analysis to determine what is happening in your spine and which areas are most likely involved in your sciatica symptoms.
Instrumentation
We use the Delta-T instrument to detect areas of abnormal nerve activity by measuring subtle temperature differences along the spine.

Static Palpation
Hands-on evaluation helps identify swelling, muscle tension, and tenderness along the spine and pelvis.
Motion Palpation
Spinal joints are gently tested for restricted or abnormal movement that may interfere with nerve function.
Only when multiple indicators point to the same problem area do we proceed with a Gonstead adjustment.
Visualization
We observe posture, movement, and balance. Changes in posture can indicate spinal or pelvic compensation that may contribute to sciatic nerve irritation.

Full-Spine X-Rays
Full-spine X-rays allow us to evaluate alignment, disc spacing, pelvic balance, and long-term structural patterns commonly associated with sciatic nerve problems. Below this is a before and after xray of someone suffering from severe sciatica cause by an L5 subluxation. You can find this case here.

What Is a Gonstead Adjustment Like?
A Gonstead adjustment is specific to a single spinal segment and delivered with controlled, precise force. There is no twisting or generalized full-spine cracking. We refer to it as “uncracking.”
- Specific (one causative vertebra, not random manipulation)
- Measured (based on objective findings)
- Targeted (focused on nerve interference patterns)
- Controlled (no unnecessary force)
Most patients describe Gonstead adjustments as firm but precise and notice changes in movement, pressure, or comfort as care progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sciatica & Gonstead Chiropractic
Can chiropractic care help sciatica?
The better question is whether chiropractic can correct a subluxation. Yes. That is exactly what chiropractors are trained to do. When sciatica is related to spinal joint dysfunction, disc stress, or mechanical nerve irritation, correcting the subluxation can significantly help sciatica symptoms.
Is Gonstead chiropractic safe for sciatica?
Yes. Gonstead chiropractic is one of the most precise and measured chiropractic systems available. Detailed analysis and X-rays help ensure adjustments are safe and specific.
How long does it take to improve sciatica?
It varies. Symptoms first. Some patients feel better after the first visit, and most notice improvement within 1 week. Worst case scenario would be 6 weeks though that is very, very rare.
Now, to correct and stabilize the subluxation. Symptoms always decrease faster than structural healing. The underlying subluxation may take several months to stabilize as discs, ligaments, and muscles heal. Where a broken bone will heal in 90 days, a disc issue could take 1 to 1.5 years. All ligaments, cartilage, discs have minimal blood flow so they degenerate instead of growing back. So for most people, they’re stabilized in 3 months or so. Children are about half that.
Do I need X-rays?
Yes. X-rays are foundational in the Gonstead system. As stated in Dr. Gonstead’s original clinic: “To see is to know, not to see is to guess—and we don’t guess about your health.”
I’ve never been to a chiropractor. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Many of our patients are new to chiropractic. We explain everything clearly and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.
