When Your Body Forgets How to Heal
Your body is designed with a remarkable ability to heal itself. This natural built-in intelligence is known as Innate Intelligence. However, that healing only occurs when your body is in a state of Homeostasis. Homeostasis by definition is the state of balance in which all body systems (nervous, immune, endocrine, digestive, etc.) are regulated and working together in harmony. Here, your body quietly carries out the processes that repair and renew us: new tissues are rebuilt, damaged cells are replaced, waste is cleared, and the immune system operates with precision. This balance is what allows us not only to survive, but to thrive.
So, what disrupts this perfect flow?
One short answer may be, Chronic Stress. When someone is caught in constant stress, their body does not have the opportunity to reach homeostasis aka “repair mode”. Instead, they are stuck in fight-or-flight. When in survival mode, the body sends energy away from the healing and repair system to the defense system. To the body this means: digestion slows down, the immune system becomes erratic, and inflammation lingers like a fire that never burns out. The stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline) stay elevated, flooding the body’s systems. Over time this imbalance creates a vicious cycle.
Adding to this burden, many people also live with subluxations, subtle misalignment in the spine that interfere with nervous system communication. When spinal joints are misaligned, they send distorted signals to the brain, reinforcing the perception of stress. In other words, even if there is no immediate danger, the nervous system interprets these faulty signals as if the body is still under threat. This causes the fight-or-flight response, making it even harder for the body to shift into homeostasis.
The combination of chronic stress and unresolved spinal misalignment (subluxations) means the nervous system is continually bombarded with “stress signals.” Without relief, the body is never given the opportunity to fully heal, leading to a never ending cycle of tension, inflammation, and chronic conditions. Chiropractic adjustments help restore normal motion and alignment to the spine, clearing these distorted signals. This gives the nervous system a chance to regulate properly, making it easier for the body to leave survival mode and re-enter the healing state.
If the body does not get the “downtime” it needs to repair, then small injuries and stress will accumulate. Inflammation becomes chronic rather than temporary. The immune system will then become confused and overworked. It may begin attacking the body’s own tissues, setting the stage for autoimmune disease. Autoimmune conditions are closely tied to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system when the body is in a prolonged state of “fight-or-flight”. What began as an adaptive response to protect you, is now the exact thing keeping the body from ever returning to the state where healing takes place, Homeostasis.
Where Does Flight or Fight Mode Come From?
If being stuck in fight-or-flight creates so many chronic problems, the next question is: why do so many people get trapped there in the first place? The answer usually doesn’t lie in a single stressful event, but rather in how the nervous system was shaped over time beginning early on in life. The nervous system is highly adaptable when we are young. A young brain is like soft clay: experiences mold the pathways that determine how we respond to the world. When a young brain grows in an environment of safety and support, their nervous system learns that stress is temporary. They may feel fear, but once the situation passes, their body learns how to come back to balance.
However, when a young brain experiences trauma, chronic stress, or instability, the nervous system adapts in a different way. If the environment doesn’t feel safe, whether emotional, physical, or even neglected, then the brain learns that survival requires staying in a heightened state of vigilance.
The amygdala, also known as the brain’s alarm center, becomes overactive, always looking for threats. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex, which helps regulate and calm the alarm down, may remain underdeveloped. This imbalance sets the stage for a body that never fully relaxes.

Living in this constant state of sympathetic dominance means that the body is always preparing to fight or flee, but never given permission to rest and heal. Over years, this unrelenting stress response becomes the soil in which chronic illness grows. Autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, digestive issues, and fatigue can all trace roots back to a nervous system that was trained early on to survive at the expense of recovery.
Science increasingly shows a connection between early-life adversity and later autoimmune issues. Here’s how the pathways unfold:
- Chronic sympathetic drive → suppresses repair and healing, while overstimulating immune surveillance.
- Cortisol dysregulation → the body loses its natural rhythm of turning inflammation on and off.
- Leaky gut and altered microbiome → stress weakens gut barriers, increasing immune activation.
- Epigenetic changes → trauma can turn genes on/off that regulate inflammation, stress reactivity, and immune balance.
So someone who had early trauma may unknowingly carry decades of altered physiology that eventually manifests as autoimmunity, chronic pain, or inflammatory conditions.
Breaking free from this cycle requires giving the body a chance to re-enter homeostasis. Every time the nervous system is gently shifted toward parasympathetic calm. This can be achieved through stabilizing the nervous system with specific chiropractic adjustments, restorative deep sleep, limiting toxins, and involving safe human connection. In those moments, the body gets to exhale and begin relaxing. Healing isn’t something imposed from the outside; it is the body’s natural design reawakening. It is in homeostasis that true recovery happens. Without it, the body is stuck in survival. With it, the body remembers how to heal.
The hopeful truth is that the nervous system remains plastic throughout life. Even if trauma sets the body on a path of vigilance and imbalance, new experiences of safety, regulation, and support can re-train the system. Step by step, the body can remember what it feels like to come home to balance and in that space, true healing can begin.
