If you asked a random passer-by, “what do chiropractors do?” the answer would most likely pertain to the treatment of back ache, neck pain or headaches. However, when chiropractic was founded by Dr. D.D. Palmer in 1895, it was founded on the basis of vertebral misalignment’s (subluxation) reducing the communication of the nervous system to its organs. In fact, the first chiropractic patient was a gentleman by the name of Harvey Lillard who had been pronounced deaf for 17 years until a chiropractic adjustment by Dr Palmer restored nervous function to the ear allowing him to hear again.
When a vertebra of the spine mis-aligns on its disc, it causes pressure on the nerve root. This pressure causes pain, but more importantly, it restricts a nerve impulse to every organ and tissue that the nerve supplies. Since the brain controls EVERY function of the body via the nervous system, this is a serious problem for health!
Recently we had a 40 year old female patient come to us for help with complaints of pain and numbness in her lower back. During the patient history evaulation, we found she also had uncontrollable and constant uterine bleeding for the past 6 months. This was not only uncomfortable, but embarrassing for the patient and it seriously limited her daily life and activities. Before coming to our office, she had been treated medically for uterine fibroids (leiomyoma) and had undergone uterine ablation therapy where a medical doctor uses a hot instrument inserted into the uterus to destroy the uterine lining in order to resolve bleeding. This procedure failed to produce results for her. She presented to our office for treatment of her low back pain without realizing the far reaching effects a restored nervous system would have on her health and her life.
The x-ray pictured below was taken at the initiation of treatment on 5/29/14. At the Gohl clinic of Chiropractic we only use the specific Gonstead system of adjusting the spine, no traction or curve correction modalities are implemented. This patient’s primary subluxation was at the 3rd lumbar which can be seen on the x-ray (below) by the way it had dropped backwards and inferior in relation to the vertebra below it, stretching and herniating the disc. This creates nerve pressure, reducing the function of the nervous system. Current research suggests that
uterine fibroids are by-product of an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in a woman’s body. If nerve pressure exists in nerves innervating organs producing these hormones, imbalances can occur. Thus by correcting the CAUSE of imbalance and thus fibroids, the symptoms can alleviate on their own.
After 3 weeks of specific Gonstead chiropractic care, the patient reported that her bleeding stopped and her back pain was significantly decreased. 6 months of embarrassment and suffering were now gone. The 2nd x-ray was taken after 6 weeks of care and 12 office visits on July 17, 2014. The 3rd lumbar disc space increased in size and the posterior misalignment (disc herniation) was significantly decreased, confirming the changes that had taken place in the body. Most importantly, the incredible relief experienced by the patient and the freedom to return to a normal life was invaluable.
